Croasdale Belted Galloway's

The Croasdale herd of pedigree Belted Galloway's was started in 2001. The cattle are very suited to the farm and play a vital role in enhancing the biodiversity of the fell through conservation grazing. Their selective grazing allows more native plant species to grow, which in turn is improving habitats and the array of wildlife on the farm.

30 cows calve each year and we run up to 100 head of mixed aged cattle at any one time. It is a closed herd, as we breed our own female replacements and only buy new bulls in every 3-4 years, which are sourced by studying bloodlines and genetics.  Our current stock bulls are Lomond Whiskey Galore and Cairnsmore Prince Charming.

The Croasdale herd is part of the Premium Cattle Health Scheme and we have a High Health Status, with a Risk Level 1 for Johnes Disease, and accredited for BVD since 2008. We are situated in a TB 4 yearly testing area and vaccinate annually for Leptospirosis.

Many cattle have been sold direct off farm over the years to various places throughout the UK, including Northern Ireland, as well as two overseas to Germany. In the past we have attended the Society Sale at Castle Douglas with heifers, and more recently and frequently attending the Society Sale at Carlisle, with a mix of heifers and breeding bulls.
